Local Auctioneer Competes in International Auctions Contest

As reported by the Clarke Times Newspaper

Hash, of Hash Auctions, located at 632 E. Main St., who has been auctioneering for 13 years, became the Virginia Auctioneer Association's state champion auctioneer last year.

He attended auctioneering school in Billings, Mont., in 1993 and became licensed in 1994.

"I've competed in the state championship since my rookie year, and now I want to go on," Hash said. "I wanted to go through the ranks."

Among the 100 contestants are auctioneers from the United States, Canada and South Africa, Hash said. The competition will take place at the Caribe Royale Resort and Convention Center in Orlando, Fla. The preliminary competition will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the finals will begin at 7 p.m.

Hash explained that each auctioneer gets up to sell three items. It doesn't take a good auctioneer long to sell three items, so it's important to make the short amount of time count.

"It's what I do every week, but the pressure is tenfold," Hash said...........see link for further article

Auctioneer Sells Rare Gold Coin
Rarity Fetches $28,500

By Laura B. Withers

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BERRYVILLE — Local coin collectors got a run for their money this week.

A $10 gold coin, minted in 1797, was auctioned off Wednesday at Hash’s Auction Center for $28,500. A collector from Beverly Hills, Calif., was the high bidder.

“Not bad,” owner/auctioneer Brian Hash said Thursday. “Not bad at all for one little coin.”

Some locals who attended the auction were overwhelmed by the coin’s final price, Hash said.

In a Winchester Star article Tuesday, Hash said he expected the coin to go for $25,000 to $30,000. It was appraised at $25,000, he said.

When a friend saw the story, he told Hash no one would pay that much for the coin.

On Wednesday, that friend was eating his words.

“He was mad enough to come back and congratulate me,” Hash said. “Sometimes for those guys, it’s hard to swallow your pride, but he did.”

The coin is part of the estate of the late Gladys M. Grubb of Clearbrook. Hash already has sold 11 sections of her estate, including a variety of glassware.

The Beverly Hills bidder started the auction at $15,000. He made his bids over the phone with one of Hash’s employees.

Another man in the audience bid $22,000, Hash said. A third bidder on the phone from New York bid $28,000.

When the New York bidder would not go any higher than $28,500, the Beverly Hills collector won the auction.

The coin also was offered on the Hash’s Auction Center Web site, www.hashauctions.com. But Internet bids did not exceed $10,000, Hash said.

When Hash discovered the coin, he knew it was worth much more than anything else he had ever auctioned.

He and his wife, Dawn, got on the Internet and started researching notable coin collectors across the country and alerted them to the auction.

Dawn found the Beverly Hills man through his Web site. She sent him an e-mail to ask if he was interested in bidding.

“A couple days after he received that e-mail, this guy called out here and wanted a little more information on the coin,” Hash said.

The collector sent an appraiser from Fairfax to Berryville to check out the coin.

“And it just kind of went from that point,” Hash said.

He figures the buyer knows much more about the coin than he ever will. It may be worth more than $28,500, but Hash will never know.

“A coin like that, it’s not like you have an opportunity to buy it every day,” he said. “And I guess that’s what this guy was looking at. Either that, or he just wanted the coin that bad.”
